TYPES OF BEAM SECTION BASED ON AMOUNT OF REINFORCEMENT



The Beam Section depending upon the amount of steel reinforcement, may be classified as follow,

1-Balanced Section or economical section or critical section
2-under-reinforced section
3- Over reinforced section

Balanced section:

When the steel reinforcement is of such a magnitude that the permissible stresses in concrete and steel are developed simultaneously then the section is known as Balanced section. The neutral axis corresponding to this condition is called critical neutral axis. In this section, the amount of reinforcement is same as that required for a balanced section.

Under-reinforced section:

The section in which concrete is not fully stressed to its permissible value when stress I steel reaches its maximum value. Such section is known as under-reinforced section.
In this section, the amount of reinforcement provided is less than that required for a balanced section. In under-reinforced section, the position of actual neutral axis lies above the critical neutral axis. Thus the depth of neutral axis is less than that of balanced section.

Over reinforced section:

When the steel reinforcement is not fully stressed to its permissible value then the section is known as over reinforcement section. The amount of steel in over reinforced section is more than that required for a balanced section. In such a section, the stress in concrete reaches its maximum allowable value earlier than that in steel. Since the amount of steel is more, therefore the position of actual neutral axis lies below the critical neutral axis. Thus the depth of neutral axis is more than that of balanced section.
