The art of brick laying consists in arranging and bedding bricks in mortar in such a manner as to form a well united mass know as Brick work or Brick Masonry.
COMMON DEFECTS IN BRICK MASONRY:

USING SUB-STANDARD MATERIAL:
When sub-standard materials such as under burnt or over burnt bricks, poor quality of mortars etc. are used in the brick masonry, they may result in dampness, cracking and early failure of the structure. To overcome this defect, standard material such as sound and well burnt bricks. a good quality of mortar should be used in the masonry.
CORROSION OF METALS:
The iron or steel members, embedded in the brickwork may get corroded when not properly protected. The corroded metal increases in volume thereby causing cracks in the masonry. To overcome this defect, the iron or steel members should be properly protected with rich cement mortar.
EFFECT OF SULPHATES:
When cement mortar is used in the brick, the sulphate salts present in the brick react chemically with the aluminium compounds of the cement in the presence of dampness. The chemical action results into expansion of mortar thereby causing cracking of brickwork, spalling of brick edges, cracking and peeling of plaster. To overcome this defect, the brick having sulphate content should not be used in the brickwork and also the dampness be prevented as much as possible.
This will cause cracking in the brickwork. To overcome this defect, accumulation of water should be prevented.
The accumulation of white deposits on the exposed surface of bricks in brick masonry is called efflorescence. It is due to crystallization of salts presents in the bricks or absorbed by them from the soil in contact with the brickwork. This provides the ugly appearance and may cause disintegration of brickwork. To overcome this defect, Sound bricks in good mortar should be used in brickwork. The brickwork should be protected against contamination with salt bearing materials during building operation. The damp-proof courses should be well designed and provided properly in required position to overcome dampness in brickwork.
