WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

The aim of Construction Management is to facilitate the execution of work in a planned and efficient manner as per design and specifications within the prescribed time limit and with the greatest possible economy in construction cost. In order to achieve this, the Construction Management should have the following functions:

PLANNING:

It is an administrative process which translates the policy into a method of achieving the desired objective. Each work should be planned with respect to the manner of execution of the work, urgency of work and the availability of resources.

ORGANIZING:

The type of Organization depends upon the type and volume of work as well as method of execution. An organization set up should be kept simple and balanced.

DIRECTING:

The object of directing is that each employee should know exactly what he is supposed to do, how and when to do.

CONTROLLING:

In a Construction work, the following are the main aims of controlling:

(a) To keep a watch over the physical progress of each activity of the work.
(b) To control the quality of work.
(c) To control the expenditure on each item of work.
(d) To control the use of machines.

COORDINATING:

The coordination is necessary so that proper information is made available at proper time to the correct person. The proper planning, design and execution of the work is called Modular Coordination.
